Lai's separatist actions will turn people off, mainland says

A Chinese mainland spokeswoman said on Wednesday that Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's separatist actions will inevitably be abandoned by public, following a recent poll in Taiwan showing a sharp decline in trust and satisfaction with his administration.

The poll results released by Taiwan's "pro-independence" media "Beautiful Island Electronic Newspaper" on Monday shows that Lai's administrative performance has experienced a "death cross" situation, with satisfaction plummeting by 8.5 percentage points, from 55.6 percent in March to 47.1 percent in April, while dissatisfaction increased from 40.6 percent to 47.3 percent.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said, "What the people of Taiwan desire is economic development, social stability, and peace in the Taiwan Strait."

However, Lai has continuously stirred up political disputes, suppressed dissent, provoked cross-Strait confrontation, sought to provoke separatist actions, and hollowed out Taiwan's advantageous industries, Zhu said.

His actions are completely contrary to the interests and well-being of the people of Taiwan, naturally leading to increasing discontent and opposition among more Taiwan people, she said.

On Saturday, the major opposition Chinese Kuomintang held a protest in Taipei against the Democratic Progressive Party's "dictatorship", attracting more than 250,000 people to rally in rain.

The rally took place against the backdrop of the so-called mass recall launched by the DPP earlier this year, which targeted legislative representatives affiliated with KMT, as searches were conducted against KMT offices across Taiwan.

Zhu said that less than a year into Lai's term, Taiwan has already plunged into political turmoil, developmental stagnation and security risks, stirring widespread public discontent, and the rally was an expression of Taiwan people's anger and dissatisfaction with Lai's governance.
