Huangshan steps into world spotlight as must-visit destination

Updated: May 12, 2025

Huangshan held a cultural and tourism promotion event in the Tunxi district on May 9, highlighting its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and a wide array of travel experiences available to global audiences.

Officials from Anhui's tourism department recently emphasized the region's unique attractions, while Malaysian travel agents and media representatives recounted their enriching experiences in Huangshan. Guests were further engaged through interactive displays showcasing local cultural-creative products, intangible cultural heritage, and agricultural specialties, immersing them in the city's unique charm.

The event coincided with the launch of Huangshan Tunxi International Airport's first direct flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, bridging cultures across seas and mountains. Malaysian delegates expressed their admiration for Huangshan's natural beauty, saying, "The sea of clouds at Bright Summit feels like a fairyland, and the gravity-defying Flying Over Rock left even us - accustomed to tropical rainforests - speechless."

Liang Yunjin, a travel journalist from Malaysia's Guang Ming Daily, was captivated by Hongcun village's ancient architecture reflected in South Lake, saying, "Every step here echoes history, perfect for slow travel." She praised Huangshan Scenic Area for blending "pristine nature with top-tier facilities, ensuring safety and immersive experiences."

Beyond Malaysia, over 270 cruise-ship tourists recently arrived in Anhui to explore its springtime beauty, signaling a growing global appetite for in-depth cultural trips to the region. Huangshan's systematic upgrades - policy support, service enhancements, and cultural resonance—are reshaping its inbound tourism landscape. During the 2025 May Day holiday, the city welcomed 2.37 million visitors, up 28.58 percent year on year, with ticket revenue hitting 52.79 million yuan ($7.3 million), up 14.91 percent year on year.

Since 2024, Huangshan Airport has added seven international routes, while Huangshan North Station launched direct high-speed trains to Hong Kong. Over 20,000 foreign-card-friendly merchants and 34 tax-refund shops now form a seamless "worry-free payment network", complemented by multilingual signage and streamlined immigration services.

This year, Anhui is doubling down on its "Inbound Tourism Doubling Plan", offering 20 million yuan in subsidies to incentivize tour operators, alongside 50 percent discounts for foreign tourists at 34 top-tier attractions in Huangshan and Chizhou.
