Intl symposium discusses major global earthquakes and prediction research

An international academic symposium focused on earthquake and risk prediction concluded in Shenyang, capital of Northeast China's Liaoning province, on Thursday.

The event was held from Wednesday to Thursday, and was attended by 300 experts and scholars from 38 countries and regions, according to a news release by the China Earthquake Administration.

The participants engaged in deep exchanges on the causes of major global earthquakes and earthquake prediction research, sharing scientific progress and practical experiences while exploring the future direction of earthquake prediction research, the release said.

At the symposium, the China earthquake forecast development strategy was interpreted, while a scientific framework for predicting major earthquakes on the mainland was also disclosed.

Additionally, the conference concentrated on three main areas: advancing scientific and technological innovation in earthquake prediction and disaster risk reduction, developing and applying new technologies and methods, and improving earthquake prediction practices.

During the event, Wang Kun, head of the China Earthquake Administration, met with representatives from the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior, as well as delegates from the United States, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries.

They reached a consensus on deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation to jointly enhance global earthquake prevention and disaster reduction capabilities, according to the release.

The symposium was organized by the CEA's Institute of Earthquake Forecasting, marking the 50th anniversary of the 7.3-magnitude earthquake which hit Haicheng, a city in Liaoning, in 1975.

According to the institute, the earthquake remains the only major quake in the world to have been successfully predicted with detailed documentation.
