More chemical bombs found in Qiqihar

Updated: 2004-05-30 16:26

Dozens of bombs along with several suspected gas bombs, discarded by Japanese troops in World War II, were found in Qiqihar of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province recently, said a local official Sunday.

The finding place has been isolated for further excavation and a check up. The locals were transferred by the local police.

The bombs were found on May 23 in the city's Angangxi District, where a Japanese airport was located and a deploitation regiment was stationed, according to the local residents.

So far, no residents have become victims of the bombs, thanks to a timely handling by the local military force, the authority said.

Further investigation is continued while the Chinese government had informed the Japanese government via diplomatic channel about the new findings.

Chinese have raised their voice to urge the Japanese government to take a correct attitude toward history and shoulder the responsibility to clear up all the chemical weapons left over by the Japanese invaders.

According to statistics, some 2,000 Chinese have so far become victims of the discarded chemical weapons after the war was over.

In Qiqihar alone, eight incidents involving Chinese becoming victims of Japanese chemical weapons have taken place since the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949.
