Chinese urban employees saw their salary leap in 2003, with the average annual salary rising to 14,040 yuan (about 1,698 US dollars), up 13 percent from the previous year, the latest statistics show.

"The actual growth rate could still reach 12 percent, if price factors were excluded," said officials with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MOLSS).

Statistics show that employees from the state-owned enterprises (SOEs) earned 14,577 yuan on average in the past year, according to a report jointly released by the MOLSS and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The whole year's salary of employees from collectively-owned enterprises stood at 8,678 yuan on average in 2003, the report said.

Employees from other enterprises reported an average salary of 14,574 yuan, almost the same as that of employees from SOEs.

According to a recent survey conducted by an institute under the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRCSC), 70.8 percent of Chinese employees earn 800 to 2,500 yuan (96.74 to 302. 3 US dollars) monthly.

The survey covers 1,883 enterprises sampled across the country in the past 12 months.

Of all the firms surveyed, 27.4 percent or the largest group pay 1,200 to 1,800 yuan a month, 23.8 percent pay 800 to 1,200 yuan, and 19.6 percent pay 1,800 to 2,500 yuan.

And 4.7 percent of the surveyed pay less than 800 yuan monthly while 0.2 percent pay more than 8,000 yuan.

People in east China are richer than in central and west China, according to the survey.

It shows that 67.3 percent of the enterprises in east China pay an average monthly salary of 800 to 2,500 yuan to their employees, while 64.2 percent in central China and 66 percent in west China pay averagely 800 to 1,800 yuan a month to their employees.

Of the surveyed enterprises in west China, 6.5 percent pay their employees a monthly income of less than 800 yuan. The percentage of this income group in west China is higher than in other parts of the country.

Firms with foreign investment or investment from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan have the most employees earning more than 5,000 yuan a month, compared with SOEs, joint stock companies and private companies.

People working in the banking and insurance industries earn the most among all industries surveyed. Some 67.3 percent of the firms in this sector have a monthly salary of over 2,500 yuan and the percentage of employees earning more than 8,000 yuan a month is also the highest.

The mining industry is the lowest paid. Of all mining enterprises surveyed, 62.5 percent have a monthly salary of 800 to 1,200 yuan.
