Sporting Lisbon beat Alkmaar on late goal

Sporting Lisbon beat visiting AZ Alkmaar 2-1, and Parma and CSKA Moscow drew 0-0 Thursday in UEFA Cup semifinals.

Sporting substitute Mauricio Pinilla scored with 11 minutes remaining to overcome Alkmaar. The victory put Sporting in prime position to reach the final May 18 at home.

Alkmaar, third in the Dutch league, took the lead on a goal by Denny Landzaat against Ricardo. Sporting tied the match when Roudolphe Douala beat Henk Timmer.

Parma and CSKA had chances in Italy, but neither could break through. Parma, fighting to avoid relegation from Italy's Serie A, enjoyed more possession time but was thwarted by its own poor finishing and CSKA's stubborn defense.

Winner of this competition in 1995 and 1999,

Parma, a two-time champion of Europe's second-tier tournament, rested some of its top players because it has a crucial league game Sunday against Livorno.

If CSKA wins in Moscow, it will become the first Russian team to reach a European final.

The return legs are scheduled May 5 in the tournament decided on aggregate goals over two matches.
