SCHUMACHER'S WORST

Fisichella was in third place, and heading for his first appearance on the podium since he won the Australian season-opener in March, when the Renault stalled after his second pitstop.

"Had it not been for his problem at the final pitstop, he would have beaten Raikkonen by a healthy margin," said Renault's engineering head Pat Symonds.

The Roman ended up fourth, ahead of BAR's Briton Jenson Button -- the overwhelming crowd favourite on a sunny afternoon -- and Ferrari's seven times world champion Michael Schumacher.

That was Schumacher's worst result at Silverstone since he broke his leg there in a 1999 crash. In 14 races at the circuit, he had never finished lower than fourth.

"Clearly we are simply not fast enough at the moment," said Schumacher. "If you compare our performance from the two North American races to these last two, we appear to be going backwards instead of forwards.

"We are not up to the level of our competitors."

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was seventh for Ferrari with Toyota's Ralf Schumacher claiming the final point.

Button's points allowed BAR to overtake Minardi in the standings but there was embarrassment for Japan's Takuma Sato, who finished 16th after accidentally switching off his engine before the start.

A minute's silence was held before the race as a mark of respect for the London bomb victims and there was no champagne sprayed on the podium.
