65 miners killed in Xinjiang gas explosion
By Qin Yan (China Daily)
Updated: 2005-07-12 05:44

The chances of the 18 missing miners surviving appear slim. The cause of the blast is under investigation.

The State Administration of Work Safety has ordered the region to stop all mines operating that are considered risky, according to the China News Service.

In another accident, three miners were confirmed killed and three others survived in a coal mine flooding that occurred July 4 in Yongzhou of Central China's Hunan Province, Xinhua reported yesterday.

The flooding accident happened in Qiyang County, Yongzhou City, and trapped 6 miners underground. The local government organized immediate rescue work and saved three of them.

The local government is still dealing with the aftermath of the accident.

This year alone there have been 60 mine accidents each killing more than 10 people, with at least 1,338 people dead in coal mine blasts, fires and other accidents, according to figures from the safety administration.

Although work safety should be a priority, many coal mines, especially small ones, still operate without safety certificates or sound safety facilities.
