Schumacher puts Ferrari back on pole in Hungary

World champion Michael Schumacher seized Ferrari's first pole position of the Formula One season in Hungary on Saturday, Reuters reported.

The German roared around the twisty Hungaroring circuit, where he won last year to clinch his Italian team's sixth successive constructors' championship, in one minute 19.882 seconds.

It was the 64th pole position of the seven-times champion's phenomenal career, leaving him one short of the record set by the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

Renault's championship leader Fernando Alonso of Spain ran slightly wide at the last corner, kicking up dust, to qualify a disappointing sixth.

Schumacher will be joined on the front row by Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya in a McLaren.

Italian Jarno Trulli, in a Toyota, and McLaren's leading title contender Kimi Raikkonen shared the second row ahead of Toyota's Ralf Schumacher and Alonso.

Alonso leads Raikkonen by 36 points in the championship with six races remaining after Hungary.
