Theft of cables blamed for train crash

SHENYANG: The theft of electrical cables has been blamed for a fatal train crash that killed five and injured 30 on Sunday night.

The cables were part of a signalling system, failure of which caused the nose-to-tail collision of two trains on the line between Changchun and Dalian in Northeast China, China News Service reported.

The trains collided at around 8 pm on Sunday north of Liaoning provincial capital Shenyang, derailing five carriages and killing five passengers. Previous reports put the death toll at six.

At 7:52 pm, the K127 passenger train - which runs from Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, to Changchun, Jilin Province - smashed into the tail of a cargo train.

Broken signalling equipment meant the passenger train driver had no warning of the cargo train's presence on the track.

The accident affected thousands of travellers who were left stranded at Shenyang Railway Station

Vice-Railway Minister Hu Yadong rushed to the scene after the accident to help organize rescue work and ensure the prompt restoration of rail services.
