No. 20 Daniel Hantuchova breezed past Frenchwoman Camille Pin 6-3, 6-1; 25th-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy defeated Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 6-2, 7-5; No. 26 Nicole Vaidisova beat Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-1; No. 30 Ai Sugiyama overcame five double faults to beat Alyona Bondarenko 5-7, 6-4, 6-3; and No. 33 Vera Douchevina routed Tiffany Dabek of the United States 6-1, 6-2.

Among the lower women's seeds, No. 28 Flavia Pennetta of Italy was eliminated by Germany's Julia Schruff 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; American Laura Granville upset No. 22 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy 6-2, 6-1; and Maria Elena Camerin beat No. 21 Darina Safina of Russia 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

Top seed Maria Sharapova got off to a smart start, dispatching Greece's Eleni Daniildou 6-1, 6-1.

In other men's play, No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal beat American Bobby Reynolds 6-3, 6-3, 6-4; No. 10 Mariano Puerta prevailed over Israel's Noam Okun 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-0; and No. 18 Ivan Ljubicic defeated Germany's Tobias Summerer 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Among the lower seeds, No. 23 Jiri Novak ousted Belgian Dick Norman 6-4, 6-4, 6-2; Czech Tomas Berdych outlasted Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4), 6-4; No. 24 Mikhail Youzhny beat Germany's Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-0, 6-2; and No. 29 Tommy Haas rallied to beat Australia's Peter Luczak 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.

The final Grand Slam of the year began with temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius (83 Fahrenheit) and humidity around 60 percent, typical for the end of summer in New York.
