A look at some of the deadliest days in Iraq since major combat was declared over on May 1, 2003:

2004

_April 4: Clashes between rioters and troops in four cities kill at least 22 Iraqis, eight U.S. troops and one Salvadoran soldier. One Marine killed in separate fighting.

_March 2: Coordinated blasts strike Shiite Muslim shrines in Karbala and in Baghdad, killing at least 181.

_Feb. 11: Suicide attacker blows up a car packed with explosives in a crowd of Iraqis waiting outside an army recruiting center in Baghdad, killing 47 people.

_Feb. 10: Suicide bomber explodes a truckload of explosives outside a police station in Iskandariyah, killing 53 people.

_Feb. 1: Twin suicide bombers kill 109 people in two Kurdish party offices in Irbil.

_Jan. 18: Suicide car bombing near main gate to U.S.-led coalition's headquarters in Baghdad kills at least 31 people.

2003

_Dec. 27: Suicide bombers and assailants with mortars and grenade launchers blast coalition bases and governor's office in Karbala, killing 19.

_Dec. 14: Suicide bomber detonates explosives in car outside police station west of Baghdad, killing at least 17.

_Nov. 15: Two Black Hawk helicopters collide and crash in Mosul, apparently hit by ground fire, killing 17 American soldiers.

_Nov. 12: Suicide truck bomber attacks headquarters of Italy's paramilitary police in Nasiriyah, killing more than 30 people.

_Oct. 27: Four suicide bombings target International Red Cross headquarters and four Iraqi police stations in Baghdad, killing 40 people, mostly Iraqis.

_Aug. 29: Car bomb explodes outside mosque in Najaf, killing more than 85 people, including Shiite leader Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim.

_Aug. 19: Truck bomber strikes United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, killing 23 people including top U.N. envoy.

_Aug. 7: Car bomb explodes outside Jordanian Embassy, killing 19 people.
