Five years of tech displayed

Some 160 high-tech achievements and technological breakthroughs made in the province during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15) were recently showcased at a science expo jointly held by the Shaanxi Department of Commerce and the provincial science and technology bureau. The event has attracted about 2,000 Chinese government officials, entrepreneurs and delegates from 12 local universities and 20 chambers of commerce. Contracts worth more than 300 million yuan ($49.2 million) were signed during the expo.

2. Shandong

Copyright holders cash in

Copyright contracts worth a total value of nearly 6 billion yuan were signed at the first Northeast Asia Copyright Creativity Fine Products Exhibition & Trade Fair in Qingdao, which ended last week. The fair attracted more than 90,000 visitors and 390 exhibitors, nearly 70 of which were from overseas. The exhibits included books, audio and video products, industrial designs and traditional handicrafts.

Kids get hooked on books

The first China Shanghai International Children's Book Fair recently ended in the city. More than 150 international publishers presented some 50,000 children's books, including 20,000 from overseas. The three-day event also attracted many famous foreign children's book writers and illustrators, such as Nobel Prize-winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio and Swedish illustrator Maria Nilsson. Organizers said the second session will kick off next November and the exhibition space will double.

4. Sichuan

Fake paint ring busted

Enforcement officials in Pixian county recently cracked down on a group making and selling fake Nippon and Dulux paints after three months of investigation. The local police found 10 illegal factories producing fake labels and counterfeit products. They arrested 27 suspects and seized more than 60 tons of sheet iron, 20,000 pails, 28 tons of fake paint and seven production facilities with a total value of 60 million yuan.

5. Zhejiang

Chinese, US experts talk IP

The 2013 China-US Intellectual Property Seminar was held on Nov 14 in Hangzhou. Co-hosted by the Chinese and US branches of International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, the seminar was aimed at helping Chinese entrepreneurs better understand the IP protection systems in the United States. Experts called for closer cooperation between the two countries because the US is the world's largest IP creator, while growth in this sector is fastest in China.

6. Guizhou

College patent apps No 1 in west

Colleges in the province had applied for more than 2,000 patents by the end of August, topping all provinces and regions in western China. Its average annual growth rate ranked second. Around 1,350 applications were granted, including 850 for invention patents. Most of colleges in the province have established IP management systems, and three of them now have specialized IP management organizations.
