Dance of Buddha

The Buddhist story of Thousand-Hand Guanyin will be staged by director Zhang Jigang. As early as 2005then-choreographer Zhang first created the dance and he became known across China. After seven years' preparation as a director, Zhang has made it a dance drama for the stage.

Changing view of ink

Eleven post-80s and post-70s artists adopt traditional Chinese typical ink-and-wash painting as their language to illustrate contemporary art in the exhibition Changing View, organized by Dandeli Art Center. Instead of traditional themes, paintings reflect their contemporary aesthetic and values, trying to offer a peek at how Chinese ink-and-wash would be employed in the future.

Pop art for China

Mei Le's solo exhibition The Last Supper is on at Beijing's modern Sanlitun district. The young artist expresses his attitude toward fast-paced modern society through different media, including photography, video and paintings. Deeply influenced by Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol, Mei tries to create a unique "Chinese pop art".

Judge Dee revisited

Robert van Gulik (1910-1967) was a Dutch writer, Sinologist and diplomat. His detective novel Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee was based on the Chinese detective Di Renjie of the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). A lecture will be given by Shi Ye from Shanghai Normal University; award-winning filmmaker, Rob Rombout and Van Gulik's granddaughter Marie-Anne Souloumiac.

Fruits of the Biennale

Part of the Ninth Shanghai Biennale events, the Zhongshan Park Project has featured a series of exhibition and workshop tours since last September. A new exhibition has opened at Power Station of Art, wrapping up the Zhongshan Park Projects tour. Work from 43 artists and groups are presented under the title Echo - A Journey of Art.

Shakespeare for today

TNT Theater's production The Taming of the Shrew is directed by Paul Stebbings, whose production features original choreography and live music. The Shakespeare classic will be presented in a style accessible to young and contemporary audiences.

Hong Kong

Blues Saturday

As part of the April Band Extravaganza at Dada, this Saturday will showcase the rhythms of celebrated Hong Kong blues guitarist Tommy Chung and his band. Chung is credited with being the city's most-recorded blues artist. Groove along while relaxing with one of Dada's signature cocktails as you soak in the surrealistic atmosphere of a lounge devoted to Dadaism.

Art and consequence

Le French May kicks off with an artist in residence program at Osage Atelier. Curated by Amandine Hervey of Mur Nomade, A Game of Consequence shows the working progress of artists in residence Frenchman Regis Gonzalez and Hong Kong's Tsang Chui-mei. During their two weeks in the studio, they will collaborate on a 20-meter-long wall painting using a surrealistic method inspired by the parlor game Consequence, where words or images are collectively assembled.

Design smorgasbord

A trio of Hong Kong creative talent is being showcased at Savannah College of Art and Design's gallery. In the Mix features the eclectic fashions of Daydream Nation alongside the abstract realism paintings of Carrie Chau and Renaissance guru Stanley Wong, better known as Another Mountainman. Their synergy and unique interpretations of their crafts result in a dynamic visual feast.
