Two dead in Guangxi mudslides, rescue operations continue

A mountain landslide, which occurred on Saturday night in Luchuan county, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, due to heavy rain brought by Typhoon Wutip, has resulted in the deaths of two people by Sunday morning.

The landslide occurred in the county's Shapo township, triggering mudslides and causing damage to villages, with three people trapped, according to China Central Television.

Local government mobilized emergency response teams, firefighters, and militia forces to the scene to conduct rescue efforts overnight, and by 7:30 am Sunday morning, two people had been rescued, but were confirmed dead by on-site medical staff. According to CCTV, one person remains buried, and rescue operations are ongoing.

On Sunday morning, the center of the typhoon was located in Guangdong province, moving rapidly northeastward at a speed of 45-50 kilometers per hour with weakening intensity, according to forecast from the China Meteorological Administration at 8 am.

Widespread heavy rainfall is expected to continue in the southern parts of the country, with areas in Jiangxi and Zhejiang provinces experiencing heavy rain (100-150 millimeters), according to the forecast.

Meteorological experts advise the public to be vigilant against secondary disasters such as landslides and mudslides that may be triggered by localized heavy or prolonged rainfall, and to stay away from areas prone to geological disasters, such as mountainous regions.
