影片簡介：

未來某年的7月2日，美國各地的監(jiān)視站發(fā)現(xiàn)一艘直徑達(dá)數(shù)百英里的巨大飛船接近了地球。飛船發(fā)出的無線電信號(hào)干擾了地球的通信衛(wèi)星信號(hào)，并放出了多艘直徑達(dá)15英里的子飛船飛抵地球上各大城市的上空。外星飛船敵友未明，人們陷入了恐慌和迷惑。

電腦工程師戴維（杰夫?戈德布拉姆 飾）破譯出外星人發(fā)出的無線電信號(hào)，其實(shí)是攻擊的倒計(jì)時(shí)信號(hào)，他設(shè)法通知了前妻，總統(tǒng)的助理康妮，但是為時(shí)已晚，7月3日，外星人的飛船開始攻擊地球，人類文明瞬間遭到巨大的打擊和災(zāi)難。總統(tǒng)（比爾?普爾曼 飾）等人撤離到軍事基地，指揮空軍反擊，卻猶如以卵擊石，毫無作用，軍事基地也被摧毀，唯有飛行員史蒂文（威爾?史密斯 飾）設(shè)法誘使一架外星人戰(zhàn)斗飛艇墜毀。

幸存者們逃到了秘密軍事基地，在那里，科學(xué)家們一直在研究一艘50多年前墜毀的外星飛艇，致力于找出對(duì)付外星人的辦法，那里也是人類最后的希望……
